The cult classic movie Office Space is a scathing critique of life for software engineers in a cubicle farm, and it did get a lot of things right even if it didn’t always mean to. One of those is the character of Tom Smykowski whose job is to “deal with the customers so the engineers don’t have to”. The movie treats Tom and his job as a punchline in a way, but his role is actually very important for most real businesses that rely on engineers or programmers for their core products. Engineers can have difficulty relating to customers, and often don’t have the time (or even willingness) to handle the logistics of interacting with them in the first place. Customers may get frustrated understanding engineers or communicating their ideas clearly to them. A person like Tom Smykowski is often necessary to bridge the gap and smooth out the rough edges on both sides, but in the Linux world there are very few Toms to rely on. The customers, or users, have to deal directly with the engineers in many situations, and it’s not working out very well for either group. Linux has a marketing problem, and it needs a marketing solution if it ever wants to increase its market share in the PC realm. ...

Newark airport security screening delays due to TSA equipment issue

An equipment problem is causing increased wait times at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A, the airport said in an alert. The issue is affecting travelers at gates 30 to 39, the airport said. An X-ray unit is out of service, but is expected to be repaired later Monday, a TSA spokeswoman said. The terminal includes flights for Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest. “Passengers who are in a longer line can use that time to their advantage by removing all items from their pockets and placing them in their carry-on bags to speed the line once they get past the ticket document checker,” TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said. Due to a TSA equipment issue at security screening for #EWR Terminal A Gates 30-39, there is increased wait time. There has been quite a demand for ice melt at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam. Rock

There has been quite a demand for ice melt at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam. Rock salt or sodium chloride is the least expensive but can cause damage to concrete sidewalks and can leave a white residue. Agawam Rocky’s Ace Hardware Manager, Joe Ovelheiro told 22News, “The best one to get honestly is the calcium chloride, you pay a little bit more but you use less and it will melt at a higher temperature, -25 degrees.” The calcium chloride won’t stain your driveway or sidewalks. You can also get a special pet-safe ice melt that won’t harm your dog or cat’s paws. And you may want to get an ice melt that works at lower temperatures because some arctic air is moving in. 2010-2019: Highlights From A Decade Of World-Changing Israeli Innovations

Just 10 years ago, self-driving cars were a sci-fi fantasy. Waze wasn’t yet the household name for traffic updates. Face ID didn’t exist and, in any case, smartphones were still in their infancy and wouldn’t know what to do with the facial recognition technology. Alexa, Snapchat, Instagram, Uber, the iPad, Apple Watch, and consumer drones weren’t part of the tech lexicon either. And people still relied on pocket cameras for photos.  “The past decade has seen dramatic changes in the innovation world. From the beginning of the decade, smartphones have become widespread and evolved into mini-computers — though early smartphones were being developed in the 1990s, they were not as sophisticated as the 2010 ones, and not common. Today half of humanity spends a big part of our lives, through them,” Limor Shmerling Magazanik, managing director of The Israel Tech Policy Institute, tells NoCamels. “Social media and social networks emerged with force and became something most people use. Then Big Data analytics joined the array of innovations followed by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Digital platforms, services and products are a big part of the realities of our lives. Edu...

How to Stand Out in the Promotional Golf Product Game

When we’re trying to impress someone in conversation, we often list “The Legend of Bagger Vance” as our favorite film of all time. But, candidly, we’d have to give that accolade to “Happy Gilmore.” The point is that either way, golf’s influence over our lives cannot be denied, and we can see why. It’s a game of great skill, synonymous with good weather and the birthplace of the Arnold Palmer. Golf is also a vehicle for endless business opportunities and networking events. According to We Are Golf’s annual report, in 2016, golf tournaments and other events raised $3.94 billion for charity. In addition, the National Golf Federation’s Golf Industry Report found that in 2017, the number of people who played on a golf course for the first time increased for the fourth straight year, meaning there is no shortage of prospective clients and event attendees. Golf’s continued success is great news for promotional distributors because, as we know, the sport requires countless promotional products. From towels to golf balls, the branding potential is endless. To help navigate your journey to the green, we spoke to Meredith O’Brien, vice president of sales and director of custom imports for ...

Buying new motorcycle boots can be an unnecessarily complicated procedure. There are too many styles to

Buying new motorcycle boots can be an unnecessarily complicated procedure. There are too many styles to choose from, different levels of protection, different levels of practicality and comfort, and to make things even more complicated: sizing variations from one brand to the next! Having the right pair of boots is essential, and the right pair will drastically improve your riding experience. The wrong pair, on the other hand, will make riding a chore. The wrong sized boots will make you uncomfortable, which will take your attention away from the road and put you in danger. A pair of boots that aren’t designed for the kind of riding that you’re doing could leave you unprotected and more vulnerable in a crash. And cheap no-name brand boots could let the rain and cold in at best, or fall apart at the slightest bit of contact with the asphalt at worst. To make like a little bit easier for you we’ve put together a list of 10 of the best motorcycle boots on the market in our opinion, with a short buying guide to help you make sure that you’re buying the right motorcycle boot for your needs too. So without further ado, here are the top motorcycle boots for all riders! When it comes to...

Sierra Canyon preparing Boston for UK basketball | Ledger Independent

There might not be a player better prepared to deal with the whole scope of Kentucky basketball than guard Brandon “BJ” Boston. He left his Georgia high school this season to play at Sierra Canyon, a high profile prep school in California. He’s on a team loaded with talent, which obviously will hep get him accustomed to the stars he will have with him at UK in the nation’s top-ranked 2020 recruiting class. Boston is a top 10 player in the 2020 recruiting class but UK signees Terrence Clarke and Devin Askew have both seemed to get more attention than him. However Rivals.com recruiting writer Krysten Peek says not to question Boston’s skill level. “BJ is the diamond in the rough in this recruiting class,” Peek said. “He’s in LA playing with the best team on the west coast and it will be a crazy season but he will be the star of the show. “He is sneaky good off the bounce. His shot mechanics are amazing. He’s 6-6 with long arms and can defend the 1, 2 or 3. He’s a very quiet kid and has to warm up to you but he’ll be a great teammate. “He’s locked and loaded on being ready for UK. He is in the gym every day with his dad. He’s a true gym rat who has his eye on the prize at UK.” A l...

State pension top-up: pay £741 now to get an extra £5,925 when you retire The Telegraph Search Icon Save Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon

If someone offered you a 30pc return on your money you’d probably assume it was a scam. But that’s exactly what the Government offers through its state pension top-up scheme. If you make “Class 3 National Insurance contributions” you can fill in missing years in your NI record, which determines how much state pension you’ll receive. Now that the new tax year has begun, you can check if you paid enough National Insurance in the last tax year, 2016-17. How much extra pension you can buy depends on whether you fall under the old or new state pension system. For those who come under the new system, which applies to anyone whose state pension age falls after April 6 2016, the cost to “buy” a missing year in your National Insurance record is £741 (although you can buy as little as an extra week). In turn that buys you £237 a year in the new state pension – the equivalent of a 32pc annual return on your investment. Over a 25-year retirement you would receive an extra £5,925, not taking into account annual increases. If you reached state pension age before April 6 2016 you fall under the old system of “basic” and “additional...

Terminalia Chebula provides protection against dual modes of necroptotic and apoptotic cell death upon death receptor ligation

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. To obtain the best experience, we recommend you use a more up to date browser (or turn off compatibility mode in Internet Explorer). In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Death receptor (DR) ligation elicits two different modes of cell death (necroptosis and apoptosis) depending on the cellular context. By screening a plant extract library from cells undergoing necroptosis or apoptosis, we identified a water extract of Terminalia chebula (WETC) as a novel and potent dual inhibitor of DR-mediated cell death. Investigation of the underlying mechanisms of its anti-necroptotic and anti-apoptotic action revealed that WETC or its constituents (e.g., gallic acid) protected against tumor necrosis factor-induced necroptosis via the suppression of TNF-induced ROS without affecting the upstream signaling events. Surprisingly, WETC also provided protection against DR-mediated apoptosis by inhibition of the caspase cascade. Furthermore, it activated the autophagy pathway via suppression of mTOR. Of the WETC constituents, punicalagi...
