After seven years, the haunting episodic adventure game Kentucky Route Zero is finally complete. The game’s first chapter came out on PC in 2013. Tomorrow’s Act V marks the end of the story. A new “TV Edition” for consoles collects all five acts—the main story pieces of the game—and four interludes—side content that ties back into the story. I’m mainly a PC gamer, so the thought that there is no longer more Kentucky Route Zero to expect is strange. But if you primarily play on consoles, it’s possible you’ve never played, or even heard of, Kentucky Route Zero before. You’re in for something special. It’s a game that reminds you that you can only do so much, but there will always be things—maybe too many, maybe not enough—left to do. It’s hard to sum up what Kentucky Route Zero is. It’s a game with a misleadingly simple premise: you need to help a guy deliver some antiques. It has a similarly misleadingly simple aesthetic: the art is all blocky shapes and solid colors. Gameplay is simple, too. You mostly pick between text-based dialogue options. Sometimes, you drive a truck. Once, you drive a boat. The game, however, is anything but simple. It’s rich, deep and provocative. It’s cr...

China coronavirus death toll rises to 170; confirmed cases soar to 7,711

The nationwide death toll from China’s novel coronavirus epidemic has jumped to 170 with 38 more fatalities reported mainly from the worst-affected central Hubei province, the government said on Thursday, while confirming more than 1,700 new infections. The coronavirus outbreak began in Wuhan, capital of China’s Hubei province, in December and has now spread across the globe. The Chinese authorities are trying to contain the epidemic while other countries, including India, are working on plans to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan and other cities in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called the coronavirus a “demon” which should be brought under control, pledging that the government would be transparent and release information on the virus in a “timely” manner. China’s National Health Commission said on Thursday that 7,711 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus had been reported in 31 provincial-level regions and in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps by the end of Wednesday. It said in its daily report that 1,370 patients remained in critical conditions, and 12,167 people were suspected of bei...

Photo by Laura Guido/Whidbey News-Times Kara Pelzel, 3, and Ethan Boswell, 4, toil away in the kitchen space at Oak Harbor Playtown. Last Thursday afternoon, Ethan Boswell busily hammered away, wearing a fluorescent orange construction vest. Nearby, Nathanial Mildener methodically filled his shopping cart. The boys are 4 years old and 15 months respectively and were going about their days in a miniature town, perfect for people of shorter stature. Gabby Schiller opened Oak Harbor Playtown on Jan. 4, and the business has already surpassed 1,000 visits, she said. She is a Navy spouse and mother of three children under the age of 12. Playtown, located on Northeast Midway Boulevard, includes a little grocery store, doctor’s office, police station, gym, soda shop and library. Upstairs, there are three bounce houses. “He thinks this is his,” Ethan Boswell’s mother Corin Boswell said, after he changed from a construction outfit into a doctor’s lab coat. “It’s his size.” The family has been to Playtown nearly 10 times since it opened earlier this month. She said it provides a large and imaginative space to play when the weather isn’t great and a chance to “get out of the living room.” T...

Monarch butterfly and dragonfly migrations are so massive they’re being caught on NWS radar

A north wind tailing behind a cold front carried the monarchs and dragonflies over central Oklahoma on Oct. 5. OKLAHOMA CITY – The National Weather Service’s weather surveillance radar captured a massive migration of monarch butterflies and dragonflies flying over the central United States. The monarch butterflies and dragonflies were being carried by a north wind tailing behind a cold front that was passing through central Oklahoma on Oct. 5. In the image shared by NWS, the colorful patches of the map reveal the extent of the migration, with the densest areas marked in yellow and red. This is the leading end of the migration, and the additional green areas mark the rest of the butterflies trailing behind. Radars like WSR-88D, which captured the data, transmit 10 cm electromagnetic waves at the speed of light in the form of short bursts of radio waves. These radio waves then travel through the atmosphere and will strike any present hydrometeors, such as rain, hail or snow, causing the radio wave energy to scatter in all directions. The energy which reflects back toward the radar is measured by a fine-tuned receiver, which can then determine whether the hydrometeors (rain/s...

The High-Tech Way To Get Copies Of Your Keys, But Is It Smarter?

Just about everyone has keys for their cars, where they live and work, for vehicles, and other locks and at some point we may need duplicates or to replace lost or broken ones. Even more critically, if we get locked out of our cars or where we live we may need to urgently acquire the right key which may mean calling a locksmith with potentially high costs. That scenario is what gave Greg Marsh the idea to start a company in New York to make it easier to obtain pre-registered keys on demand for the most common brands of locks. Five years ago his girlfriend could not find her key and was locked out of her apartment in New York at 2:00 A.M. She had no choice but to call a locksmith who charged her a lot of money to get in. So Marsh conceived of the idea that ultimately resulted in a company called KeyMe. That enterprise now has more than fifteen hundred automated kiosks in drug stores and supermarkets throughout the United States. They can produce keys, vehicle key fobs, and access control tags on-demand at a reasonable price. It was a simple idea: allow a consumer to scan keys into the system at the kiosk or on their smartphone for later retrieval with a fingerprint or username an...

From cotton balls to computer coding: Dallas marks National STEM Week.

DALLAS TWP. — That not-so-old acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — STEM — has proven it doesn’t have to mean high-tech work or advanced physics. As students at the Dallas elementary schools proved, it can be anything from a paper airplane to a roundish robot. All four district schools participated in National STEM Week beginning Monday and running through Friday with a broad sample of how STEM seeps into almost anything you want to do. The high school began on Monday with information for students about STEM careers, including a presentation about flying drones or in the world(s) of virtual reality. Dallas Middle School students are getting a chance to use new Industrial Arts equipment, including a laser engraving machine. Both the Intermediate School and Wycallis Elementary — which, combined, house kindergarten through fifth grade — set up activities in their gymnasiums for students to take turns trying. At the new Intermediate School, which welcomed students for the first time this fall, smiles and surprise were abundant as student discovered how to launch cotton balls, fold efficient paper airplanes and use simplified coding to make little robots roll the wa...

Researchers estimate that the human body could contain as many as 75 trillion cells. Each of those cells is surrounded by a bean-shaped membrane made up of dense rows of fatty acids that require protection from lipid peroxidation. Of the many popular antioxidants that help protect cells (e.g., astaxanthin, lutein, lycopene, CoQ10), vitamin E is the one nature chose to reside within the lipid cell membrane to protect its integrity. Vitamin E comes in the perfect molecular shape to do this job—like a tadpole, with a head and tail, similar to the phospholipids that complement the cell membrane. Vitamin E is distinguished by a chromanol head with a lipid-soluble side chain.  There are two forms of vitamin E: tocotrienols and tocopherols. Not all forms of vitamin E are the same, however. Tocopherols have a longer tail (phytyl), whereas tocotrienols have a shorter, more flexible tail (farnesyl).1 This small difference in molecular structure allows tocotrienols to cover a larger surface area of the cell membrane more quickly, hence making them more effective as antioxidants. As this article will discuss, an expanding body of research points to significant benefits supporting the tocotr...
